Diplomacy was Essential to Take the Cause of Independence to the World

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, said, on Tuesday, in Luanda, that the diplomatic field was necessarily decisive in taking the cause of the country’s Independence to the world.

Téte António made these statements in an interview with São Tomé and Príncipe television, in the country’s capital, on the sidelines of the 49th anniversary of Angola’s Independence, which will be celebrated on 11 November.

The official said, however, that just by looking at the diplomatic jargon “the fight continues and victory is certain” people from other parts of the world will be able to understand where the phrase comes from and, consequently, understand that it comes from the National Liberation Struggle which, according to him, left its mark even on universal language.

On the other hand, Téte António highlighted that, for independence, Angola benefited from the solidarity of the African continent, through the decisions of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), at the time, to make the liberation struggle in Africa a primary objective, namely emancipation against colonialism and apartheid, including the creation of the so-called liberation committee.

In this context, these actions represent an overview of “our struggle, which was crucial to getting us to where we are today”.

The diplomat also stressed that cohesion with other liberation movements, particularly in Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP), was fundamental to achieving self-determination for peoples in Africa.

Migration represents a universal phenomenon

Regarding the migration situation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that it was necessary to demystify the word migration, since, according to him, there is a tendency to focus on the negative side of the universal phenomenon.

“Human beings have always lived on the move. Perhaps in history you will rarely find people who have always lived in the same space. The movement of populations is a universal phenomenon that has occurred in all periods of history.

If we look at the world map, he continued, we will come to the conclusion that man “is a traveling being who seeks certain levels of development and opportunities, like the African continent, which has a predominantly young population”.

“The tendency is for part of the population or youth to look for other regions of the world, windows of opportunity,” he explained.

In this sense, he highlighted that, although it is a universal phenomenon, certain mechanisms must be found, not only to address the migration situation, but also to regulate it.

“That is why we have the mobility agreement in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) precisely to help this type of inevitable phenomenon in human life”, he said.
