Africa-Press – Angola. Goalkeeper Marta Alberto, a member of the senior women’s national handball team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, begins working today with the group selected by Carlos Viver, as part of the second preparatory micro-cycle for the 26th African Championship in the category, scheduled for the 27th of this month to the 7th of December in Kinshasa, DRC.The Petro de Luanda player showed up, but was restricted in the first few days due to malaria, according to the national coach. “Marta has been here, she is not training due to malaria, but in principle she will start tomorrow (today), without any type of limitation”, assured Carlos Viver, at the end of yesterday’s only training session.

Today, the team’s preparation programme includes two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. “The team carried out a physical resistance test to find out how they are doing physically and to improve their resistance on the pitch, then we worked on our attacking procedures, against the 6-0 defence. In fact, we did a combined training session, with a first phase involving a physical test, then a more tactical part and we finished with tactical work, more counter-attacking moves”, he explained.

The coach is aware that in Africa the Pearls are a target to be beaten, for this reason, he revealed concern about the psychological aspect. “We know that all the African teams see us as a target to beat, we are the reference for women’s handball in Africa and they will all try to get a good result from us. We have to prepare ourselves for the battle in every possible aspect”.

Carlos Viver called up the following players: Marta Alberto, Eliane Paulo, Helena de Sousa (goalkeeper); Donana Epalanga, Estefânia Venâncio and Liliane Mário (pivot); Marcela Tati and Naíria Caquintas (left wing); Balbina Nunda, Márcia Manuel (right wing); Regina Santos, Chélcia Gabriel (centre), Bernardete Belo and Marília Quizelete, Vilma Nenganga (left wing); Juliana Machado, Dolores do Rosário and Suzete Matias (right wing).

Angola will play the first phase in Group B, alongside DRC, Tunisia, Guinea, Cameroon and Uganda.
