Minister Warns of the Effects of Climate Change

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of the Environment defended, yesterday, in Luanda, the reinforcement of the discussion on the protection of biodiversity and the fight against climate change, stating that they constitute urgent and emerging issues, as their negative effects are already being felt throughout the world.

Ana Paula de Carvalho made this recognition at the launch ceremony of the 1st International Conference on Biodiversity and Conservation Areas in Angola, which will take place in Luanda, from 30 to 31 January next year.

On the occasion, the minister said that it was essential to make an increased effort to protect Angolan biodiversity, for environmental sustainability and for greater and better environmental education. She pointed to biodiversity as an essential matrix of life, in which each plant, animal and ecosystem is the key to our survival.

However, he said, we are witnessing increasing pressure on vital resources day after day, with ecosystems, habitats and species facing unprecedented threats. “Angola is proud to have an extraordinary biodiversity, made up of conservation areas that are true sanctuaries and refuges that shelter some of the rarest and most precious species on the entire planet,” he stressed.

Ana Paula de Carvalho referred to Angola’s participation in the Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity (COP16), in Cali, Colombia, where she presented what has been done in the country in favor of environmental conservation, measured the pulse of other countries participating in the event, exchanged experiences and presented proposals for agreements.

According to the minister, Angola returned from the COP motivated to reinforce policies to protect biodiversity and conservation areas.
