Africa-Press – Angola. The Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) kick off today and will run until Saturday in Washington, D.C., United States of America, where Angola is present with a mission led by the Minister of Finance, Vera Daves de Sousa.

The mission includes the Minister of Transport, Ricardo Viegas d’Abreu; the Secretary of State for Planning, Luís Epalanga; the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Angolan Sovereign Fund, Armando Manuel; the National Bank of Angola, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Water and senior finance officials. At the heart of the Spring Meetings are the meetings of the joint Development Committee of the World Bank Group/IMF and the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the IMF, where progress in the work of the institutions is discussed.The organization states in a note that other events to be highlighted include regional briefings, press conferences and forums focused on international development, debt issues, economic recovery and private sector mobilization.

Objectives

In Washington, the delegation will participate in different sessions and meetings at the highest level, addressed to ministers and governors of central banks from around the world, in addition to hearings and meetings with executives of international banks and heads of several Bretton Woods institutions and international high finance to analyze the international macroeconomic situation, as well as specific issues in the African region.

The agenda includes high-level seminars and discussion panels, such as the meeting of the Development Committee, the Constituency of ANSA (Angola, Nigeria and South Africa) at the World Bank and Constituency 1 at the IMF. Also noteworthy are the forums of Central Bank Governors at the AfG1 (IMF) and of Sovereign Investors promoted by world banks.

The Minister of Finance, Vera Daves de Sousa, will join the High-Level Working Group on the Global Financial Architecture, and at a technical level the team she leads will hold meetings with the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department and the World Bank’s Human Capital Department, among others.At the invitation of the Atlantic Council, the Ministers of Finance and Transport will participate in the round table that will address the Role of Investment in Infrastructure and Transport in the Lobito Corridor.

Angola has been a member of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund since 1989 and, in recent years, has been strengthening its relationship with these institutions through specific programs, with a view to improving the management and consolidation of national accounts, improving investment mechanisms and promoting the country’s economic and social growth.
