Rwanda and DRC Set may 2 as Deadline for Peace Agreement

Africa-Press – Angola. Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have set May 2 as the deadline to reach a peace agreement and have committed to respecting the sovereignty of both. The information is contained in a declaration signed by the foreign ministers of Rwanda and the DRC and witnessed by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, Lusa reported.

In an announcement on Wednesday, the Congolese government and the anti-government group M23 issued a joint declaration for the first time, in which they said they wanted to “work towards the conclusion of a truce”.

The conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo worsened at the end of January, when the rebels seized Goma and Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, both on the border with Rwanda and rich in minerals such as gold and coltan, essential for the technology industry and the manufacture of mobile phones.Since the intensification of the M23 offensive, around 1.2 million people have been displaced in these two provinces, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In addition, clashes that erupted in and around Goma left more than 8,500 people dead in January, according to the Democratic-Congolese Minister of Public Health, Samuel Roger Kamba, at the end of February.
