New Secretary-General of the OACPS Proposes Reform of the Organization

Africa-Press – Angola. The new Secretary-General of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), Moussa Saleh Batraki, said on Friday in Luanda that one of his main priorities is to enhance and restructure the organization so that it “works at the service of its 79 member states”. The statement was made during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after a meeting with the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Angolan Communities, Domingos Vieira Lopes, on the occasion of his 72-hour official visit to the country.

“We want to establish capacity-building programs, deepen the partnership with the European Union, relaunch trade between member states, strengthen South-South cooperation and work towards greater climate resilience, with a special focus on combating youth unemployment,” said Moussa Saleh Batraki. The Chadian diplomat, who took office in March this year, thanked the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, for leading the process of his appointment as acting President of the OACPS Troika Summit. “It was thanks to his vision that I am now leading this organization,” he acknowledged.

Moussa Saleh Batraki also revealed his desire to meet with young Angolans on his next visit to Angola, whom he considers essential for the future of the OACPS. “Young people bring a new dynamic and productivity that we need to renew and transform our organization,” he said.

With a vast career in development, diplomacy and governance, the new Secretary-General of the OACPS was previously a minister in Chad and worked with several international organizations, such as the UN and the African Union. He is fluent in French, English and Arabic and succeeds Angolan diplomat Georges Chikoti, who has led the organization since 2020.
