Africa-Press – Angola. On Monday, the National Assembly began a discussion on the specifics of the Bill on Clinical and Biomedical Research, a legal instrument considered essential to fill the legislative gap that still exists on this subject in the country. The proposal aims to regulate the basic principles and rules of health research, as established in the Basic Law of the National Health System (Law No. 21-B/92, of 28 August), with emphasis on the protection of subjects involved in clinical trials and the guarantee of equality in the ethical approval processes.
During the debate, Member of Parliament Maria Antonieta drew attention to the exclusion of epidemiological research in the document, as announced by Parliament on social media.
“I cannot understand where research into epidemiological studies fits into this law, in a country where the main cause of death is malaria and we are facing systematic outbreaks of cholera. We cannot restrict public health to the laboratory,” he criticised.
MP Vigílio Tyova defended the need for more restrictive definitions in the law, as this is a sensitive matter that directly involves human beings.
