Africa-Press – Angola. The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Nigerian Amina Mohammed, encouraged African member states to consider sustainable development as an emergency issue on Saturday in Luanda. The challenge was expressed during the Annual Meeting of UN Resident Coordinators for Africa, whose opening was attended by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa.
“We have to view development as an emergency issue. We have a framework that should help us work across borders, bringing together the main stakeholders, namely civil society, political decision-makers, academics, among others”, she said, stressing that the UN is working towards multilateralism across the continent.
On the occasion, António Guterres’ deputy praised Angola’s efforts to materialize the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aligned with Africa’s progress.Highlighting the importance of these efforts, Amina Mohammed said that the Angolan Executive, through its National Development Plan (NDP) 2023-2027, demonstrates the country’s capacity to deal with development and diversification issues.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General also highlighted the active participation of women and young people in the decision-making process in Angola, emphasizing the role held by the Vice-President of the Republic.
Regarding the refugee situation, she defended the need for UN Member States to develop a system to provide increasingly efficient responses and integrated support to countries for the needs of the current context.
“We have to join forces to deal with these demands”, she encouraged.
Resident Coordinator in Angola
In turn, the resident coordinator in Angola, Zahira Virani, reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to investing in the country’s human and sustainable development.
“We have a cooperation framework that was signed last year, which is fully linked to the National Development Plan (PDN) and in this cooperation framework, young people and women are the focus”, she assured.
For us, Zahira Virani stressed, there is no future without investing in education, health and employment for young people.
