Africa-Press – Angola. The chairman of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST), Dom José Manuel Imbamba, on Tuesday in Saurimo City, eastern Lunda-Sul Province, said that Catholic schools should be a space for the promotion of the human person, becoming a valuable instrument of social, cultural, religious and civic action.
The prelate was speaking at the 19th National Assembly of Catholic Schools, which is being held under the slogan “50 years of Independence, a look at the contribution of Catholic schools to the quality of education in Angola”.
He reiterated that in these 50 years, there is the need to reap and renew the commitment to continue to be a sower of worthy practices in the consciousness of students, in order to project the ideals of nobility and honour for the construction of a healthy and developed country.
The cleric stressed that Angolan society calls for a school that forms healthy consciences that are ethically committed to the good and the truth, that forms strong, altruistic personalities who are open to plural coexistence.
To this end, he considered it essential that schools emphasise education for life, freedom, justice, peace, democracy, citizenship and solidarity.
In turn, the governor of Lunda-Sul, Daniel Neto, said that the Catholic Church has always played an essential role in education in Angola, not only as a transmitter of academic content, but also as a generator of values.
The provincial governor recalled that in difficult moments in the country’s history, there were several moments when the church, with humility and courage, kept the school doors open, thus bringing hope to children, teenagers and young people.
He assured that the government will continue building more schools, hire new qualified teachers with with the aim to add value, related to the pedagogical field and also related to other areas for students.
Daniel Neto invited delegates from the country’s various provinces to reflect on the Angolan education system.
The five day event covers topics such as the state of education in Lunda-Sul, the Catholic school, the formation of citizens and the promotion of values, among others.
The meeting brings together representatives from the provinces of Malanje, Luanda, Huambo, Lunda-Sul, Huíla, Uíge, Bengo, Moxico, Lunda-Norte, Cuanza-Norte, Cuanza-Sul, Namibe and Cuando.
The archdiocese of Saurimo controls 11 schools, where 9,571 students are enrolled this school year and have 172 teachers.
