President of Huambo'S JGM Academy Dies

Africa-Press – Angola. Jorge Gomes Mangrinha, the president of the JGM Académica Sport Club in Huambo, died Thursday morning from an illness at the local Central Hospital at the age of 69.

Family members confirmed the death at 1:10 a.m. in the emergency department of the province’s largest health center.

He had a recognized career in sports associations and was a central figure in promoting youth sports in Huambo province.

He founded the JGM Academy in May 1998 and was responsible for training hundreds of athletes in football, athletics, handball, and other disciplines. Most notably, he led the club to victory in the zonal qualifying championship in 2016, earning them a spot in the 2017 national first division football championship.

Jorge Gomes Mangrinha built infrastructure and provided social support for young athletes, ensuring they had shelter, food, and education.

The club maintains a strong presence in national sports to this day, competing in the B series of the qualifying zone for the top division this season. It occupies fourth place with 18 points, one matchday away from the end of the competition.

Jorge Gomes Mangrinha was a former player for Sport Huambo e Benfica (Mambroa), where he made a name for himself as a right winger from 1978 to 1985. He presided over the club from 1991 to 1995.

Born on November 29, 1955, in the Kaquerewa neighborhood on the outskirts of Huambo, Mangrinha also distinguished himself as a businessman and professor at the Faculty of Economics.
