Africa-Press – Angola. The African Union chairperson, João Lourenço, has appointed Evariste Ndayishimiye, Head of State of Burundi and African Union Youth, Peace and Security Champion, as his Special Envoy for the Sahel region.
In an official statement distributed at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, João Lourenço, who is also Head of State of Angola, warmly thanked Evariste Ndayishimiye “for accepting this strategic political mission in the collective interest of the Union”.
According to a statement from the Press Service of the Presidency of the Republic released this Friday, with this appointment, President Evariste Ndayishimiye will lead the diplomatic support and joint high-level efforts of the African Union to address the prevailing humanitarian and security challenges in the Sahel.
The task of João Lourenço’s Special Envoy includes intensifying engagement with government officials, opinion leaders, actors and organizations in the region, civil society and all relevant stakeholders to foster dialogue, build consensus and promote comprehensive strategies for lasting peace and stability in the Sahel region.
The Head of State of Burundi has extensive political experience and impeccable credentials for his firm commitment to Pan-Africanism, regional integration and cooperation.
The appointment reflects the African Union’s commitment to supporting peacebuilding and regional cooperation in one of Africa’s most critical regions.
