Africa-Press – Angola. A lack of planning and adequate preparation were cited (Tuesday) in Luanda as the reasons for the negative results of the senior women’s national basketball team at the African Championship (Afrobasket2025), taking place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Evaluating the results of the Angolan team, which suffered two defeats in Group A, against Egypt (54-70), and the host Côte d’Ivoire (74-82), relegated to the play-offs, against Cameroon on Wednesday, sports analyst Weza Fortunato assured that the country’s representatives have little chance of victory.
For the expert, everything that has happened so far in the group stage is a reflection of a certain disorganization, accentuated by the lack of planning, in the short and medium term, and the poor preparation of the team, a responsibility of the governing body of the sport, without the fault of the hardened players and coaches. He added that, based on existing data, it will be very difficult for the Angolan team to beat its Cameroonian counterpart. However, if that happens, given the team’s effort, it will mask existing shortcomings, particularly regarding advance planning and adequate preparation.
Regarding the team’s performance and performance, Weza Fortunato argued that it cannot continue to rely solely on player Italee Lucas, who needs a suitable substitution at certain points in the game and can bring added value to the team.
“We need to sit down and examine everything that’s wrong so we can fix it. Everything requires good planning and programming, for a profound reform and working on projecting success for Angolan basketball. Only then can we put an end to the expectation of utopia,” he said.
Regarding the play-off round, which also allows for a quarterfinal, Angola will play Cameroon at 10:00 PM on Wednesday, in a round that also features matches between Mozambique and Guinea at 1:00 PM, Egypt and South Sudan at 4:00 PM, and Senegal and Rwanda at 7:00 PM.
The winners of these matches will join the teams of Uganda, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, and Nigeria, already qualified for the quarterfinals.Angola has won Afrobasket twice, in Mali in 2011 and Mozambique in 2013. Nigeria currently holds the African title.
