Fire Consumes over Two Hectares of Matadi-Ya-Nginga Forest

Africa-Press – Angola. At least 2.5 hectares with 8,888 eucalyptus trees were consumed by a medium-sized fire that broke out around noon on Thursday (07) in the Matadi-ya-Nginga Forest Polygon in the province of Malanje.

According to witnesses, the flames were set by unidentified individuals intending to hunt in the area.

In an interview, Júlia da Conceição, spokesperson for the Provincial Civil Protection and Fire Service, said that 42 personnel and 2 firefighting machines were mobilized to extinguish the flames, which lasted three hours.

Júlia da Conceição emphasized that efforts are underway to determine the true causes of the fire and hold those responsible accountable.

Meanwhile, she announced a redoubling of awareness campaigns across the province, particularly in the area adjacent to the Matadi-ya-Nginga Forest Polygon, to end anarchic burning, a practice that has led to fires and damage to fauna and flora.

For three years, the polygon has been the target of constant fires of unknown causes.

This is the second fire recorded in 2025, following the first in May, which affected 3,600 square meters of vegetation.

Located 15 km from the city of Malanje, the Matari-ya-Nginga Forest Polygon occupies an area of 6,000 hectares, after being repopulated between 2012 and 2017 with the planting of 137,600 eucalyptus trees.
