Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Manuel Pereira da Silva, stated this Tuesday (19) in Luanda that the institution has been a fundamental pillar in ensuring the transparency and credibility of electoral processes in Angola.
The statement was made during the ceremony marking the CNE’s 33rd anniversary, an occasion in which he argued that the date should be more than symbolic, also representing a moment of rigorous evaluation, reflection, and projection for the future.
“The motto of this anniversary, Electoral Commission: 33 years strengthening democracy in Angola, summarizes our commitment and dedication to the cause of democracy,” he emphasized.
The official highlighted the work carried out over the last three decades, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
As part of the celebration, the CNE hosted discussions on the current challenges facing democracy, focusing on the participation of women and youth, as well as the role of technology in electoral transparency.
Manuel da Silva, however, warned of the risks of misinformation, fake news, and hate speech circulating on social media, especially among young people, warning of the negative consequences such practices can have on democratic debate.The president of the CNE thanked all the staff for their commitment to strengthening democracy in Angola.
New Challenges for the CNE
In turn, João de Almeida Martins, Secretary for Political and Electoral Affairs of the Central Committee of the MPLA Political Bureau, emphasized that, with the new Electoral Legislative Package approved by the National Assembly, the CNE will have to adapt to the requirements of the law, advocating for the ongoing training of its staff.
The president of the PRS, Benedito Daniel, acknowledged that, despite the challenges, all parties see themselves in the CNE as a legitimate body for organizing and regulating elections.
He emphasized the institution’s contribution to building democracy, meeting the expectations of the Angolan people.
The event was held under the theme “Electoral Commission: 33 years strengthening democracy in Angola” and included panels on social media and women’s engagement in elections, among other topics.
The highlight of the celebrations was the decoration of former members of the CNE, in recognition of their services to Angolan democracy.
