Africa-Press – Angola. Ombudsman Florbela Araújo stated this Wednesday in Huambo that the agency has achieved positive performance over the past five years in the area of dispute resolution and reducing caseloads in the country’s district courts.
She spoke after swearing in the Ombudsman’s Office of the Huambo Province, Eduardo Valeriano, in a ceremony witnessed by Governor Pereira Alfredo.
She stated that the agency has received significant complaints about social and legal disputes related to procedural delays, pension issues, land disputes, and failure to issue certificates and judgments as a result of the institution’s recognition of its role in the country, at a time when, as of July of this year, 5,000 complaints had been filed.
She noted that these complaints about dispute resolution are increasing as a result of the increased awareness of the Ombudsman’s role and function in communities.He acknowledged that citizens are increasing their legal literacy and knowledge of the justice system to find solutions to conflicts.
He noted that this justice body has been working to bring services closer to citizens by providing infrastructure across the 21 provinces. In this context, 12 units for the administration of justice have already been established in Angola.
He noted that Angola currently chairs the Association of Ombudsmen and Mediators of Africa, a development that gives the Ombudsman’s Office greater notoriety, both on the continent “the cradle of humanity” and in Europe.
He said that the body has so far signed agreements with Cape Verde, Mozambique, Zambia, Namibia, South Africa, Portugal, and Italy.
In brief statements, the new delegate of the Justice Services for Huambo province, Eduardo Valeriano, promised greater performance and responsibility in the pursuit of justice, to contribute to the socioeconomic development of this region.He stated that he will collaborate with the Government of Huambo Province in resolving community conflicts for the benefit of citizens and, consequently, foster sustainable development through the application of justice in communities.
The Ombudsman is an independent public entity whose mission is to defend the rights, freedoms, and guarantees of citizens, ensuring, through informal means, the justice and legality of public administration activities.
He is elected for a five-year term by the National Assembly (AN), by a decision of an absolute majority of the deputies in active service, and takes office before the President of Parliament in plenary session.
