Africa-Press – Angola. The Speaker of the Angolan National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, paid tribute to Cuban National Hero José Martí on Saturday by laying a wreath at the Memorial erected in his memory in the Plaza de la Revolución in Havana.

According to a press release from the National Assembly sent on Sunday, the event is part of the official visit the President of the Parliament is making to the Republic of Cuba, to strengthen cooperation between the legislative bodies of both countries.

The memorial, inaugurated in 1996 by then-President Fidel Castro, consists of a star-shaped tower and a statue of José Martí, preserving the legacy, life, and work of the man considered “the most universal of Cubans,” who distinguished himself by his tireless fight for his country’s independence.

The space preserves and disseminates various documents and photographs of great historical value, depicting different stages of the Cuban nationalist’s life.

The continuity of his vast work during the Revolution constitutes the essential purpose of the José Martí Memorial Museum, composed of five rooms, corresponding to the five points of the star of its architectural design.

During the guided tour, Carolina Cerqueira toured the memorial facilities, accompanied by the President of the National Assembly of Cuba, Esteban Lazo Hernández, as well as the parliamentary delegations of Angola and Cuba. At the end, she signed the institution’s guest book, on behalf of the Angolan delegation and in her own name.

In her message, the President of the National Assembly wrote that “we pay tribute to José Martí, whose dedication to the struggle for freedom and social justice leaves us lasting lessons for the continuation of our commitment to freedom, justice, friendship, and solidarity with peoples in struggle throughout the world. May his commitment and sense of patriotism inspire future generations for a better world.”

The ceremony, held with military honors, featured the playing of the national anthems of the Republic of Angola and Cuba. On that occasion, Carolina Cerqueira emphasized the greatness of the Cuban people’s struggle for independence and the preservation of peace, emphasizing that the Angolan delegation felt, in each word and example of José Martí, an encouragement to pursue the principles and values of sovereignty, identity, preservation and promotion of peace in both countries.

The Angolan delegation, led by the President of the National Assembly, included representatives Manuel Dembo, Carla de Sousa, Helena Marciano, Alcides Sakala, Benedito Daniel, the Secretary-General of the National Assembly, Pedro Agostinho de Neri, and the Angolan Ambassador to Cuba, Carlos Cruz Sardinha.

Continuing the program, the delegation also visited the Finlay Vaccine Institute, established in 1991, which operates under the motto “Vaccinating is preventing.”

The institution develops products designed to address urgent health problems through innovative approaches and highly complex technological platforms.
