Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan National Police (PNA) will resume its air brigade, which will be reinforced this year with new helicopters, which will also support rescue operations in the event of accidents or disasters, it was announced.

“At the PNA level, we are resuming the national police’s air transport brigade, we are acquiring some resources, and probably this year, helicopters will begin arriving in the country to reinforce the police force, and we will have helicopters capable of carrying out rescue operations or transporting people in the event of accidents,” said Angola’s Minister of the Interior, Manuel Homem.

Speaking during a meeting with journalists, where the Road Safety Program “Roads Without Deaths” was discussed, the governor also said that a program is underway to modernize and re-equip the Ministry of the Interior’s bodies.

The Civil Protection and Fire Service (SPCB) has 25 new rescue vehicles and this body, highlighted Manuel Homem, should also be reinforced by the end of this year with advanced life support ambulances.

“We also worry when fire trucks don’t come out with water. We also worry when there’s an accident and the fire-fighting equipment isn’t up to snuff, so this investment is happening, and by the end of the year we’ll even be reinforcing it with advanced life support ambulances,” he said during a conversation with journalists.

Homem also spoke about the process of integrating new SPCB staff: “They recently completed a specialist course, precisely to help us overcome the difficulties we still face, but we will continue to make progress and we are making this effort to improve in this sector,” he said.

At least 3,120 people die annually in Angola as a result of road accidents, an average of nine deaths per day, a situation that represents a serious public health and national security crisis, according to Angolan authorities.

The road accident situation in Angola was discussed during a meeting hosted by Angola’s Minister of the Interior, Manuel Homem, which brought together journalists and high-ranking police officers to discuss the implementation of the Road Safety Program.
