Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, has emphasised in an interview with the CNN International that the main legacy of his mandate will be the consolidation of national reconciliation and strengthening the social policies that have transformed the livelihood of the people.
The Angolan leader gave a recent interview to the mentioned U.S broadcaster, during which he made an assessment of his years at the helm of the State, and now in context with the celebrations of the country’s Fiftieth Independence Anniversary (to be marked Nov.11), but also with the idea that the country is about to prepare itself for one more national suffrage, scheduled for 2027.
The president went on to highlight that the continuity and strengthening of the national reconciliation process that began with the former Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, constitute one of the pillars of his political action.
Thus, he reminded that peace and national unity are conquests that must be preserved and deepened, for they represent essential conditions for the country’s development and stability.
Investments in the health sector
Moreover, the statesman stressed that his government has been implementing an authentic revolution in the health sector, through the construction and rehabilitation of hospitals, modernisation of services and the reinforcement of staff training.
Such investments, he explained, are intended to secure a more efficacious response to the needs of the population, as well as guarantee the universal access to health care.
Fighting the drought
João Lourenço emphasised also the structuring actions towards dealing with the drought in the southern provinces, with highlght on the water development project on the Cunene river.
He explained that projects like the construction of dams and irrigation channels have been transforming the region, thus enabling greater hydric security, improvement of agriculture and protection of cattle.
The Angolan Head of State stressed that such infrastructures represent lasting and sustainable investments, which are visible landmarks of the current government.
At a diferent point in the conversation, João Lourenço reaffirmed that Angola rejects all forms of discrimination – racial, social, gender-based or on sexual orientation – and reiterated the Angolan State’s commitment to equality and respect for human dignity.
