Africa-Press – Angola. With a view to stimulating an interest in science and promoting a culture of sports learning, the Local Development Institute (FAZ) in Cunene province held a friendly chess tournament for youth and an open category karate tournament this Monday in the municipality of Namacunde.

Sixty-four students from different schools in the city of Namacunde, the border town of Santa Clara, and the René Castilhos school (Ondjiva) participated, as reported by the FAZ representative in Cunene, Eduardo Silunda.

He clarified that the tournament was not competitive, but rather an opportunity for the athletes to exchange experiences and later participate in provincial championships.According to the official, the action, framed within the 31st institutionalization of the organization, marked on October 28th, aims to promote the exchange of experiences among chess players, in order to stimulate quick thinking and mastery of numerical concepts.

He stated that, since August 2024, a project to promote individual sports, specifically chess, has allowed the creation of two classes with 64 students, aged between 8 and 16 years old, 17 of whom are female, in the headquarters in Namacunde and Santa Clara.

The project aims to reach 240 children attending primary schools in the 11 municipalities where FAS operates, with the exception of Cuanhama, Nehone, and Cafima, in order to promote the massification of sports as a science.

Alongside chess, he said that a partnership is underway to provide technical support for the promotion of youth and school karate, with the objective of social inclusion and making both sports more visible.

However, he considered sports practice to be fundamental for children’s cognitive development and physical development, social inclusion, well-being, and social and individual skills.Created on October 28, 1994, under Decree 44/94 of the Council of Ministers, the Institute for Local Development is a government agency focused on programs to combat poverty, promote sustainable development, and foster social inclusion.
