Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Ambassador to the United States, Agostinho Van-Dúnem, expressed his gratitude in Washington, D.C., to the countries and peoples who supported the national liberation struggle.

Speaking at the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of National Independence, the diplomat recalled that Africa was the first place where countries offered political, military, and moral support for the self-determination of the Angolan people.

The diplomat highlighted the historical milestone that enshrined the right of the Angolan people to assert themselves as a free and sovereign nation. He emphasized that this date symbolizes courage, sacrifice, and hope.

Discussing cooperation between Angola and the U.S., the ambassador mentioned high-ranking American officials, including Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, who played important roles in diplomatic efforts that ended the armed conflict and paved the way for the peace and stability Angola enjoys today.

This contribution, according to the ambassador, is an integral part of Angola’s national historical memory and represents a solid foundation of trust that continues to underpin relations between the two countries.

He added that under President João Lourenço’s leadership, Angola is undergoing reforms, institutional modernization, and economic diversification, underlining that the country is strengthening the rule of law, promoting transparency, and creating an environment conducive to investment and innovation.

The ceremony took place in the Noble Hall of the embassy in Washington, D.C., and brought together diplomatic representatives, businesspeople, academics, and members of the Angolan community residing in the United States.
