Africa-Press – Angola. The Huila governor , Nuno Mahapi Dala, condemned on Friday the mistreatment, abandonment, and discrimination against the elderly and reinforced his call for the population to play an active role in reporting such practices.
After a courtesy meeting with elderly people from various social strata in celebration of the National Day of the Elderly, the governor stressed that respect for the elderly is a moral, cultural, and civic duty that affects everyone.
He stated that many cases of psychological violence, neglect, and physical abuse remain hidden due to a lack of reporting and advocated for reversing this trend. He also reiterated the need for continuous creation of strategies for the protection and social inclusion of this population.
The governor added that the local government, through the Office for Social Action, Family, and Gender Equality (GASFIG), has been working to expand community support programs, promote follow-up visits, and create mechanisms to connect vulnerable families with institutions.
During the meeting, the elderly raised concerns about their living conditions, access to health services, and social support.
In response, the governor promised to find solutions and ensured that protecting this population would continue to be a priority for the provincial government.
The province of Huila has 70,000 elderly individuals, 85,000 of whom reside in nursing homes.
