Africa-Press – Angola. The Head of State, João Lourenço, is this Friday visiting the town of Muxima, in the Province of Icolo e Bengo, with the aim of assessing the progress of the urban redevelopment works and the construction of the future Catholic Basilica of Our Lady of Muxima Sanctuary, one of the largest projects to enhance the religious and cultural heritage of the country.
The visit is part of a fieldwork with the objective to monitor the project, the first step of which consists of relocating families residing in the area where the new Basilica will be built.
To achieve this goal, the construction of the satellite city of Coxi is underway. It will include seven hundred homes for the families that will be relocated.
This is the second time this year that President João Lourenço has visited the project.
During a visit in June of this year, João Lourenço visited several critical points of the site, including streets, reservoirs and the water treatment plant, the future square to accommodate thousands of believers, and the exact location where the new Basilica will be built.
He also visited other planned social facilities, such as schools, a medical center, and complementary infrastructure.
At the end of the visit, President João Lourenço, announced his return to Muxima in December 2025, reaffirming his intention to closely monitor the pace of the work and ensure that the established deadlines are met.
The Muxima renovation project was resumed in 2018, during the President’s first term, after several years of interruption. The construction has been underway since 2022, the year the first stone of the future Basilica was laid.
The Casais–Omatapalo Consortium is responsible for the execution of a large part of the project.
