Africa-Press – Angola. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Adão de Almeida, on Sunday in Luanda stated that the country “became poorer” with the passing of Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos also known as “Nandó,” highlighting his institutional legacy and decisive contribution to the consolidation of the Angolan state.
During a tribute ceremony held in Parliament, Adão de Almeida emphasized that Nandó’s death constitutes a moment of profound national sadness, as he was a figure who dedicated a substantial part of his life to public service and the cause of Angolans.
He noted that the National Assembly feels particularly the loss of Nandó, since a significant part of his political career was built within that institution, which he led for 12 years.
According to the Speaker of the Parliament, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos’ personal legacy is intrinsically linked to the trajectory of the National Assembly itself, which is why the simple tribute paid, thus representing a gesture of institutional recognition.
He argued that the best way to honor figures of his stature is to continue their ideals and work persistently in building the nation.
Adão de Almeida also highlighted the significant moments in the country’s political life that are inseparable from Nandó’s presence in the National Assembly, mentioning the approval of the 2010 Constitution.
He recalled that Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos presided over the Constituent Assembly responsible for approving the Magna Carta, a fact that indelibly inscribes his name in the constitutional history of Angola.
The tribute ceremony brought together deputies, parliamentary staff, and other entities in an atmosphere of reflection and respect, in memory of a former Speaker of the National Assembly whose actions left deep marks on the country’s institutional life.
