Africa-Press – Angola. The African Union (AU) on Sunday expressed deep concern about recent events in Venezuela, including the news of the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro, and called for respect for the sovereignty of States and their territorial integrity.

According to a note from the continental organization, the concern also extends to military attacks against Venezuelan institutions.

The AU reaffirms its firm commitment to the fundamental principles of International Law, including respect for the sovereignty of States, their territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

It highlights the importance of dialogue, the peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks, in a spirit of good neighborliness, cooperation and peaceful coexistence between nations.

In the note, the AU emphasizes that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be addressed in a sustainable way through an inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.

It expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterates its commitment to promoting peace, stability and mutual respect between nations and regions.

The African Union calls on all parties involved to exercise restraint, responsibility and respect for international law in order to avoid any escalation and preserve regional peace and stability.

The United States of America attacked Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday, around 2 am and captured the country’s President, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Célia Flores.

The couple was transported the same day to New York, where they are in custody on several charges, including drug trafficking.
