Africa-Press – Angola. The Bita Project, which aims to strengthen the water supply in the provinces of Luanda and Icolo e Bengo, was one of the main topics discussed at the meeting between the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, and a World Bank delegation in Luanda on Thursday.

During the meeting, which focused on strengthening institutional cooperation and monitoring projects, the two parties analyzed structural themes of the water sector in Angola.

The World Bank mission emphasized the importance of accelerating the physical execution of the Bita project, particularly the water catchment component.

Minister João Baptista Borges assured the delegation that there are no financial constraints and expressed his support for a second phase aimed at increasing production capacity and expanding the distribution network.

The meeting also addressed issues related to the “Pro-Water” project, which is crucial for the Angolan government to strengthen the institutional and financial sustainability of the Luanda Public Water Company (EPAL).

Regarding this project, the minister reiterated the government’s interest in having the World Bank participate, given its impact on structuring the subsector.

Minister Borges also expressed satisfaction with the progress of projects financed by the World Bank, emphasizing the significant impact of its initiatives on increasing access to drinking water for Angolans.

The official reaffirmed the Angolan government’s commitment to deepening institutional cooperation and thanked the international financial institution for its dedication to implementing projects in the sector.

The World Bank delegation included Anna Wellenstein, the institution’s representative for Africa in the areas of water, agriculture, the environment, and social development; João Carlos, the World Bank’s representative for Angola; and World Bank experts in water supply and sanitation.
