Angolan Head of State Demands Release of Niger Leader

Africa-Press – Angola. the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, demanded, on Friday, the immediate release of the former leader of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, and the Guinea-Bissau politician and president of the PAIGC, Domingos Simões Pereira, detained as part of the unconstitutional seizure of power on the continent.

President João Lourenço was speaking during the Ceremony presenting New Year’s Greetings from the Diplomatic Corps and International Organizations accredited in Angola, having spoken out against this phenomenon that has been increasing on the continent.

In the same speech, the President expressed hope that, in the new cycle that begins this year, there will be a reinforcement of political dialogue and a renewal of multilateralism.

The Angolan Head of State also warned of democratic fragility in Africa, stating that the continent’s challenges require quick, coordinated and multidimensional responses, which integrate economic development, social inclusion, good governance and the strengthening of States’ institutional capacities.

According to João Lourenço, this approach helps to neutralize the arguments used by promoters of unconstitutional changes of power, at a time when there is a worrying recurrence of coups d’état in several African countries, therefore advocating the reinforcement of measures to discourage and condemn these practices.

João Lourenço also expressed concern about what he considered to be a “scary setback” in democratic achievements at a global level, criticizing the weakening of the United Nations and the intentional devaluation of its responsibilities.

He warned that the replacement of “the force of law by the law of force”, as well as the adoption of “double standards” in international relations, represent serious threats to world peace and stability.

Defending multilateralism as the only way to restore international order, the President reaffirmed the central role of the United Nations as a guarantor of global peace, security and stability, warning of the risks of redefining borders in various regions of the world.

João Lourenço recognized the work carried out by diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in Angola and reiterated the country’s total availability to cooperate in building a world of peace, justice, harmony and mutual respect.
