Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan ambassador to Portugal, Maria de Jesus Ferreira, appealed, in Lisbon, for unity among Angolans for the continued construction of a better country for all, regardless of political and religious convictions.

The diplomat, who highlighted this fact in a message addressed to the Angolan community residing in Portugal, on the occasion of Feb 4, the date that marks the beginning of the armed struggle for national liberation, expressed that the best way to honor national heroes is through unity among fellow citizens, regardless of political and religious convictions.

In the note, she emphasized that associations, cultural movements and churches play a fundamental role in promoting unity and bringing together efforts, together with the institutions that represent the Angolan State in the Portuguese capital.

The diplomat noted that organizations play an important role in projecting the country to higher levels of social and economic development.

In the document, the representative of the Angolan State in Portugal also highlights the fact that the beginning of the armed struggle in the country was a “decisive step” that led years later to the proclamation of National Independence on Nov 11, 1975.

Therefore, she pointed out, the best way to honor national heroes is to keep their memory alive, transmitting to new and future generations what their struggle was, typified in an undeniable contribution to the history of Angola, which “everyone has a duty to keep alive”.

“Regardless of the sacrifices caused by the challenges currently facing our community residing in Portugal, it is the duty of all of us to honor the heroes who, on Feb 4, 1961, embodied the process of armed resistance to the oppressive colonial experience,” she noted.

To that end, Maria de Jesus Ferreira stressed that all together “we are called to fulfill the duty of continuing the example of the heroes of 1961, with each one, through their work and knowledge, being called to contribute to the construction of a modern and effective State, capable of continuing to contribute to the well-being of its children.”
