Africa-Press – Angola. The provincial government of Huíla has identified approximately 500 kilometers of secondary and tertiary roads on the outskirts of Lubango that are in poor condition and has launched actions to mobilize resources from the national treasury to repair them.
The municipality of Lubango, in addition to having the largest number of inhabitants, concentrating 27% of the province’s total population, is also the most densely populated.
According to the 2024 Census, which produced these indicators, this is due to Lubango’s small territorial extension of 1,482.8 km2, combined with a high population concentration. More than 75% of its 978,715 inhabitants live in 137 peripheral localities, whose access and internal roads are in need of improvement.
In the last 7 years, nearly 150 kilometers of urban and peri-urban roads have been recovered with the first phase of the city’s integrated infrastructure.
According to the governor of that province, Nuno Mahapi, in an interview with Rádio Huíla, some of these areas already have roads under construction, as part of the 2nd phase of Lubango’s integrated infrastructure, and others have signed contracts, but still lack the resources to proceed with the rehabilitation.
The priority, according to the governor, falls on areas such as Tchioco and the Industrial Zone, where there is dense commerce and they generate a lot of local revenue.
