Africa-Press – Angola. Angola co-chaired, this Wednesday, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the first meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Smooth Transition of Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

The mechanism, created by the General Assembly, aims to strengthen the international framework of support for countries in the process of graduating and post-graduating from this category.

The Angolan co-chairmanship, shared with Finland, assumes a leading role in the intergovernmental process, focusing on the review and updating of existing instruments, as well as the formulation of recommendations that ensure a sustainable, inclusive and resilient transition.

In his intervention, the Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations, Francisco José da Cruz, advocated an inclusive, transparent and results-oriented process, aligned with the Doha Programme of Action, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other international instruments.

The diplomat highlighted the need to strengthen coherence among the different actors in the multilateral system, including international financial institutions and multilateral development banks.

The inaugural session defined the organizational basis of the working group, with the adoption of the agenda, the presentation of the working methodology, the meeting schedule, and the scope of future deliberations.

During the debates, Member States expressed their commitment to preventing setbacks in the development of countries in transition, advocating for the continuity of international support in a predictable manner and adjusted to structural vulnerabilities.

The work continues throughout 2026, with a view to presenting proposals that contribute to the adoption of a strengthened framework for supporting a smooth transition, including the possible drafting of a new General Assembly resolution. Angola’s participation reaffirms its commitment to multilateralism, nternational solidarity, and the promotion of sustainable development pathways, with special attention to the most vulnerable countries.
