Africa-Press – Angola. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, met in Addis Ababa with members of the International Contact Group for the Great Lakes region to discuss the changing security situation in the area, particularly in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The African Union stated in a release that the talks focused on how the crisis affects peace, security, and development in the broader Great Lakes region. Both parties emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing dialogue, reducing tensions, and building trust among the stakeholders in the region.

They welcomed the progress made under the Washington Agreement and the Doha Process, stressing the need to consolidate these gains through the full implementation of the commitments made.

The main priorities include establishing a permanent ceasefire, expanding humanitarian access, enhancing confidence-building measures, and continuing dialogue among the parties.

Yusuf reiterated the pivotal role of the African Union in supporting regional and international initiatives aimed at ensuring a peaceful and lasting resolution to the crisis. He urged for improved coordination between the mediation mechanisms led by the African Union and related initiatives to enhance their effectiveness.

Members of the International Crisis Group expressed their support for the leadership of the African Union in promoting peace, security, and stability in the Great Lakes region. The meeting reaffirmed that a lasting solution to the crisis can only be achieved through dialogue and peaceful means.

They urged all parties involved to fulfill their commitments, protect civilians, allow humanitarian operations to continue without obstacles, and adhere to international humanitarian law.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission warned that the Ebola outbreak exacerbates the already fragile humanitarian situation in the region. He called for enhanced regional cooperation, improved cross-border coordination, and increased capacities in health preparedness, in line with the outcomes of the recent high-level African Union meeting on Ebola in Bujumbura.

At the conclusion of the consultations, participants reiterated that inclusive dialogue, good governance, and regional cooperation are essential elements for achieving lasting peace, enhancing stability, and driving development in the Great Lakes region.
