Bié Government Urges Increased Citizen Participation

Africa-Press – Angola. The Vice-Governor for the Political, Social and Economic sector of Bié province, Alcida de Jesus Sandumbo, called for greater citizen participation in improving local governance, aiming to ensure the well-being of communities.

The Vice-Governor was speaking at the opening of a workshop on identifying other forms of local governance, promoted by the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MAT).

Alcida de Jesus Sandumbo requested the commitment of citizens, especially in the development of public policies, to resolve the problems affecting families.With this, she added, it will be easier to boost the region’s progress, with emphasis on promoting sustainable development in the province’s interior.

Regarding the workshop, she stated that it demonstrates a more open and inclusive model that the Angolan Executive is implementing within the framework of the National Development Plan, in order to increasingly improve the resolution of socioeconomic problems.

The senior official at the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MAT), Isabel Coimbra, assured that the purpose of this event is, among other objectives, to find new models for citizen participation in the local governance of the State.For the success of this activity, MAT relies on the support of Óscar Ribas University and other social actors, with a view to achieving the results envisioned by the Executive.

Isabel Coimbra confirmed, for this reason, that after discussions with civil society about other forms of citizen participation in local governance, MAT technicians and partners will conduct studies and surveys within the communities, in order to determine the appropriate model.

During the event, participants from the province’s 19 municipalities will discuss topics such as collaborative governance and local initiatives, the role of NGOs in promoting participatory citizenship, gender inclusion, youth and vulnerable groups, as well as other forms of participation (international experience).
