Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President João Lourenço granted pardon to 300 national citizens who are in prison for various crimes, in a gesture part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, marked on the 11th of this month.

According to a decree published by the Press Services of the Presidency of the Republic, the measure takes into account the fact that the proclamation of National Independence constitutes one of the most important historical milestones for the country.

The document states that it was through this act, the foundations were laid for the development of a people who had been under colonial oppression for several centuries.

According to the document, on November 11th the country celebrated 50 years of its national Independence, and for this reason the measure aims to ensure that the climate of harmony, clemency, indulgence, concord and fraternity that guides the celebration of this important anniversary that imbues, in all the Angolan people, the high feeling of patriotism and love for the country, can include citizens serving a custodial sentence.

The decree also takes into account that the pardon is an act of clemency by the President of the Republic, and it is therefore essential to adopt measures of this nature in reference to the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of National Independence, with the aim of granting inmates sentenced to custodial sentences an opportunity for social and family reintegration.

The pardon is also supported by the fact that the good behavior demonstrated and the absence of social danger resulting from the return to freedom of these convicts were verified.
