Africa-Press – Angola. The Parliament Speaker Carolina Cerqueira emphasized on Monday the significance of Indian President Draupadi Murmu’s visit to Angola during the country’s 50th anniversary of National Independence.
During her speech at the solemn plenary session, Cerqueira stressed that this anniversary represents a historical milestone and a renewed commitment to modernizing the country, strengthening democratic institutions, and integrating Angola into the international system.
Cerqueira congratulated India on its recent achievements, citing its economic dynamism, technological advances, and commitment to innovation as inspiring examples for developing nations.
The politician emphasized Mahatma Gandhi’s status as a universal symbol of peace and nonviolence, noting that his philosophy continues to inspire the pursuit of justice and equality worldwide. She also praised India’s rich cultural heritage, diversity, and spirituality, which give the country a globally recognized moral authority.
Cerqueira also highlighted India’s role in developing the Global South, its participation in the BRICS, and its advocacy for a more balanced and inclusive international order.
Cerqueira recalled India’s historical solidarity with Africa, from the struggle for decolonization to current cooperation within the Non-Aligned Movement.
“The relationship between Angola and India has been consolidated in recent years, particularly in the areas of energy, agriculture, higher education, digital technologies, and institutional capacity building,” she said.
Carolina Cerqueira highlighted the Indian stateswoman’s presence in Luanda as a milestone in elevating the bilateral partnership to a new level based on shared values such as respect, dialogue, peace, and sustainable development.
“May this visit inspire the youth of both countries and consolidate a shared future of prosperity, solidarity, and cooperation for world peace,” said Cerqueira.
Cordial and cooperative relations between Angola and India were established in 1985 and focus on commercial, economic, and technical partnerships.
India is Angola’s third-largest trading partner, mainly due to imports of Angolan crude oil.
