Africa-Press – Angola. President João Lourenço appealed on Tuesday to all Angolans to work together for the socio-economic development of the country, as “partisan squabbles should not consume the time and energy of the population and institutions”.
In his message on the 50th anniversary of National Independence, the Head of State recalled the historical milestones in the construction of a free and sovereign Angola, noting that the 500 years of colonization, slavery and humiliation were overcome by Independence in 1975.
Lourenço said that the defeat of the apartheid regime’s army in Cuito Cuanavale contributed to the democratization of South Africa and the Independence of Namibia, as well as to the definitive end of the internal armed conflict, 23 years ago.
According to the President, having overcome these obstacles, everyone’s focus should be on strengthening the economy, creating jobs, investing in education and promoting social well-being.
João Lourenço stressed the need to reduce illiteracy, reintegrate children into the school system and train more teachers, as well as to encourage economic diversification, the private and cooperative sector, increasing the supply of goods, services and export products.
The President also highlighted the importance of valuing and rewarding those who contribute to development, including researchers, entrepreneurs, startup promoters, food producers and processing industries that generate employment and wealth.
“We all need to work harder and better. Progress and development do not come only from the government’s actions, but also from the collective and combined effort of the whole society,” said the President, appealing for civic responsibility and the joint effort of all Angolans.
The Head of State stressed that the moment calls for unity, action and entrepreneurship, as the goal of all should be to build a better, fairer and more prosperous country, where it is worthwhile to live.
