Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Angola has made significant progress in preventing and combating money laundering and terrorist financing, and a new inclusion of the country in the Gray List of the International Financial Action Task Force (FATF) must be ruled out, the director said this Monday in Luanda. -general of the Financial Information Unit (FIU).<\/b><\/p>\n

Gilberto Cape\u00e7a was speaking to the press at the beginning of a mutual assessment mission of the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Group for Eastern and Southern Africa (ESAAMLG) which, which started yesterday, runs until 15 July, presenting itself as crucial to assess the country’s transparency, in the light of ongoing regulatory developments.<\/p>\n

According to the director-general, Angola did “a good job”, discarding both the negative assessment and a return to the Gray List: “this will never happen again”, he said, asked by journalists about institutional expectations regarding the evaluation.<\/p>\n

The rules introduced have been so decisive that, as a result, there has been an improvement in the business environment and there has been considerable pressure on money laundering and corruption practices, which has allowed an increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) and a strengthening of transparency of banking operations channels.<\/p>\n

When describing the rules, the director-general of the FIU stated that they are based on the choice of fighting corruption (which includes financial crimes), as a priority of the Angolan Government, indicating the Law on Effective Beneficiary as a legislative matter.<\/p>\n

In this area, there is the imminent publication of the National Strategy for the Prevention and Combat of Money Laundering, Financing of Terrorism and the Proliferation of Weapons of Massive Destruction, as well as the creation of a commission to produce a database of politically exposed persons (PPE) ).<\/p>\n

Gilberto Cape\u00e7a presented the resumption of Western Union’s monetary remittance operators, which took place a week ago, after having interrupted their activity in the country eight years ago, as one of the signs of the country’s regulatory improvement.<\/p>\n

“This was not by chance, it was an arduous work by the Angolan Government. Several policies were created to combat and prevent money laundering. Joint institutions worked a lot for this environment”, he said.<\/p>\n

Gilberto Cape\u00e7a defined the ongoing mutual evaluation process after it began, in October 2021, as a test of Angola\u2019s level of transparency in matters related to money laundering, financing of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. .<\/p>\n

According to the official, “it is an important process for our country” as it involves all structures and “many issues that have to do with Angola’s transparency” depend on it.<\/p>\n

The ongoing evaluation leads to the production of three drafts, the last of which in September of this year, of a final report that will be presented in September 2023.<\/p>\n
