Angola. <\/strong><\/span><b>Pride in London is celebrating five decades of annual marches and festivities to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The central London parade returns, on Saturday, after a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>About 2,000 people joined the first UK Gay Pride Rally, in London, on 1 July 1972, the nearest Saturday to the third anniversary of the Stonewall riots against a police raid at a gay bar in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>Now, more than one million celebrate Pride in the UK&#8217;s capital &#8211; and there are events all over the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"650\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11149 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_14.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_14.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_14-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_14-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bishopsgate Institute&#8217;s Special Collections and Archives holds one of the most extensive collections on LGBTQ+ history, politics and culture in the UK, including:<\/p>\n<p>the Lesbian and Gay Newsmedia Archive, more than 300,000 press cuttings and about 10,000 LGBTQ+ titles, from academic works, biographies, fiction and poetry to pulp fiction more than 10,000 images of Pride, from the first march to the present day<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"652\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11150 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_15.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_15.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_15-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_15-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><br \/>\n<b>1970s<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Manager Stef Dickers told BBC News: &#8220;Recording and archiving LGBTQ+ history is vital to inform, inspire and empower future generations about their own history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have missing voices from LGBTQ+ people in the historical narrative, due to the struggles and oppression the community has faced over the decades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is so important that our histories are recorded now to celebrate how far we have come in visibility and hard-won freedoms but also to warn and arm the community for any future struggles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"1270\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11151 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_16.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_16.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_16-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_16-787x1024.jpg 787w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_16-768x999.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the first march, Ted Brown &#8211; pictured above (left) with campaigner Peter Tatchell (right) &#8211; told BBC News, &#8220;there were men kissing men, men kissing what looked like men in drag and there were women kissing women and women kissing men in drag and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a declaration of freedom, declaration of rights,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did that in front of the police, almost as a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fortunately, nobody got arrested.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"994\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11152 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_17.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_17.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_17-295x300.jpg 295w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_17-768x782.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gay Pride Week, in 1976, saw a picnic in Victoria Gardens, by the Houses of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"998\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11153 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_18.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_18.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_18-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_18-768x785.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many of the images have never been publicly displayed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These kind of photo archives don&#8217;t exist elsewhere in this size and scope,&#8221; gay relationships, was repealed in 2003.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"643\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11159 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_24.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_24.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_24-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_24-768x506.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 1981 Pride march was moved to Huddersfield, in support of the Gemini Club, which police had called &#8220;a cesspit of filth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"652\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11160 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_25.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_25.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_25-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_25-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1983, the march was renamed Lesbian and Gay Pride.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"651\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11161 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_26.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_26.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_26-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/angola\/sites\/65\/2022\/07\/postMediaimg_1_26-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><br \/>\n<b>1990s<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Mr Tatchell told the BBC&#8217;s Newsround: &#8220;We have made fantastic progress.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Compared to two decades ago, Britain is almost a different country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All the main anti-gay laws have been abolished.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are now one of the best countries in the world for gay equality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Today, it is illegal to discriminate against somebody because of their sexuality or gender &#8211; although, many gay people face discrimination in their daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is big progress &#8211; but more needs to be done,&#8221; Mr Tatchell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Public attitudes are much more supportive &#8211; although, there are still families who reject their gay children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We still have too much homophobic hate crime, many kids are still bullied and a lot of schools don&#8217;t have an anti-bullying programme that specifically addresses anti-gay issues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to get to a situation where no-one cares what sexuality you are, where we accept the person and their right to love whoever they wish &#8211; male, female, both or neither.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Drag queen Lily Savage (Paul O&#8217;Grady, above centre) attended Pride in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;New additions to our archive arrive almost daily and we would recommend anyone to get in touch who wants to record and document their own LGBTQ+ history,&#8221;
