One of the incapacities provided for by law is the suspension of political and civil rights due to a sentence of imprisonment with a final decision.

The general elections for next August, scheduled for the 24th, are no exception to the rule and, like the previous ones, will also count on the participation of many young people voting for the first time. Allied to this group are young people who only turned 18 after the last general elections of 2017. This is the case, for example, of Rosário Dombo. Now 22 years old and currently attending the 3rd year of the Accounting and Administration course, this citizen, born in 2000, did not vote in the 2017 general elections, as he was only 17 years old at the time.

Now stripped of any impediment to vote in the upcoming elections in August, Rosário Dombo revealed to Jornal de Angola that he is very anxious and does not see the unprecedented moment coming.

“It is a great opportunity to participate in the process that will elect the rulers of my country for the next five years”, said the university student, adding that, on the day of the vote, he will go to his assembly earlier to avoid flooding. . “I don’t want to stand in line too long,” he said. Rosário Dombo stressed that the precaution is due to the floods he saw in some polling stations in the 2017 general elections.

Also acting as Rosário Dumbo is Filipe Xavier, 21 years old and also attending the 3rd year of higher education, but specializing in Accounting and Auditing. This citizen, born in 2001, was excluded from the 2017 elections because he was a minor.

“I was, at that time, only 16 years old”, recalls the young man, noting that he is now ready to participate in the next election. “I couldn’t wait to show off, too, my index finger painted with that indelible paint (laughs)”, he pointed out.

Catarina Barros will also debut as a voter on the 24th of August. She was left out of the past elections for being a minor. Like the first interlocutor of this report, she only turned 18 after the elections.

“It will be my first time to exercise the right to vote. I am very anxious that I am already starting to feel a certain chill in my stomach”, he confessed.

Memories Of The Happy “Totalists”

If, on the one hand, there are citizens who are going to vote for the first time, on the other, there are those considered “totalists”, for having participated, so far, in all the elections held in the country so far. This is the case of António Neto, 62, who voted in the four elections that Angola held, namely in 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2017.

António Neto reveals that he had some difficulty in participating in the first elections due to the little experience he had on the process, despite the awareness-raising work carried out by the National Electoral Commission.

“We did not have the culture of voting, which is why we lacked a sense of the process”, he stressed, referring that this framework was changed in the 2008 elections.

“In the 2008 elections, we were already more educated at the polls, given the accumulated experience of the 1992 election”, he stressed, adding that the experience accumulated in the first two elections allowed him to go more at ease and educated for the 2012 and 2017 elections. “By that time, I was already well acquainted with the process”, he assured.

In terms of organization, António Neto considered the 2017 elections to be the best of all, as, in his opinion, they had a better organizational system, eliminating the flooding in polling stations and, consequently, “pushing and pushing”.

“For me, they were the best elections ever held in the country, in terms of organization,” he said.

Josina Delgado also voted in all the elections and remembers, with nostalgia, the atmosphere lived in 1992. “We only heard about ‘elections in September”, he pointed out.

Graduated in International Relations and graduated in Law, the citizen recalls that, despite being a new experience in the country, there was a lot of euphoria on the part of Angolans in relation to voting day. Josina Delgado stressed that the lack of experience about the process was not, for many, an impediment to marking the “X” in the square of the bulletin that is towards the chosen candidate.

Josina Delgado recalls that, after the vote, a circular hole was made in one of the corners of the voter’s card, as a sign that the citizen had already exercised the right to vote. “After voting, we were offered a souvenir to take home,” she said.

Anastácia Nsanda, 51, voted in the 2008 elections, but was left out of the others, having left the country for training. She says that in those same elections she worked as an electoral agent.

“It was a unique experience. I really enjoyed it”, recalls the citizen, who says she is looking forward to participating in the next elections on August 24th.

António Gomes, 54, also only voted in the first elections held in the country (in 1992) and was excluded from the ones that followed for religious reasons. He says that, months after the vote, he joined the Organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses, whose doctrine prevents members from voting, allowing only their participation in the steps prior to voting, such as, for example, processing the voter registration.

“For that reason, I stopped voting”, highlighted António Gomes. According to data available on the official website of Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW.ORG), the organization has a total of 161,286 evangelizers in the country, one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for every 226 inhabitants.

António Gomes recalls that the first elections were marked by a very high level of anxiety on the part of Angolans.

“People were very happy to know that they were going to vote for the first time”, he recalls.

Historic Elections

The elections of the 24th of August will be marked in the electoral history of the country for allowing , for the first time, the vote of citizens abroad. This is an initiative of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço. According to data provided by the Minister of Territory Administration, Marcy Lopes, a total of 22,560 citizens residing abroad updated their electoral registration, a sine qua non condition for voting on 24 August.

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
