Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Kilamba-Kiaxi Artisanal Fisheries Cooperative, from Cacuaco, plans to increase the catch of fish from seven to 12 tons this July, informed the organization’s president.<\/b><\/p>\n

Esteves Ant\u00f3nio said in statements that, this year, the levels of capture have not been satisfactory in relation to previous years when, at the same time, the captures were around between 15 and 20 tons.<\/p>\n

One of the reasons for the failure, the head of the cooperative points out, is the disorderly fishing practiced during this spawning season and the consequent premature capture of fish in the process of ripening.<\/p>\n

“This type of fishing ends up affecting the time when fish catches of several species should have been significant”, he lamented, indicating the weak supervision by the authorities as the main factor in this failure.<\/p>\n

“Strong measures with heavy fines should be applied to those fishermen who insist on catching small fish that are in the growth phase”, he urged.<\/p>\n

Esteves Ant\u00f3nio said that the cooperative has seven vessels, two of fiberglass and five of wood, with 16 members, many of whom have their own vessels.<\/p>\n

He also referred that the periods of greatest capture are the months from May to October, contrary to the months that go from November to April, when there is a shortage of fish.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we are working with a probe to locate where you can find the biggest shoals so that our productions can increase and satisfy the demand for the product\u201d, he noted.<\/p>\n

Asked what fishing technique is used in the cooperative, Esteves Ant\u00f3nio said that it is mostly artisanal seine and gillnets, with the most fished species at this time being sardines, cachucho, mac\u00f4a, calafate and cod.<\/p>\n
