Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>From Havana and with immense sadness, I have just received the news of the death, due to illness, of General Jo\u00e3o Gabriel Vieira Lopes Amado “Gabi”.<\/b><\/p>\n

The last time we met in Benguela, the usual embrace lasted into the night until the following year. That’s because it was New Year’s Eve. Friend Gabi insisted that we go get the guitars, while he would pick up cousin Dinho Trindade and so we got together at Ol\u00edmpio’s house. We saw the sun of the new day rise and with it the new year. Shortly thereafter, cousin Dinho unexpectedly abandoned us forever, leaving the family torn apart. Now comes this ominous news that Gabi Amado couldn’t resist the disease that had been atrociously bothering him lately.<\/p>\n

We lost a great comrade in this way! A military man of exemplary career, who reached the rank of general and lately lent to politics on his own merit.<\/p>\n

He was one of those who dedicated his whole life to the Armed Forces, starting in late 1974, when he joined the FAPLA. He was part of the group of instructors of the legendary “CIR Sangue do Povo”, in the town of Assango, in Gabela.<\/p>\n

With Singapore and other companions, Gabi Amado was in fact among the handful of MPLA military instructors who, in September 1974, left Luanda in a Land Rover heading for Cuanza-Sul, in order to comply with a decision of the MPLA leadership headed by by President Ant\u00f3nio Agostinho Neto. The difficult mission consisted in creating an instruction center for the training of troops, at a time when armed confrontation between the so-called National Liberation Movements was unavoidable.<\/p>\n

I was a beardless student finishing high school in Novo Redondo, when I met Singapore, Gabi and the other fellows who had just arrived. Months later, we met most of the staff of the Esquadr\u00f5es da Gabela, including those of the legendary “Esquadr\u00e3o Kwenha”, whose oath of flag was one of the most solemn military events I have ever attended. All this is recorded in a book that Singapore wrote and which, about three years ago, he gave me the honor to present.<\/p>\n

At that time, when we were going through difficult times in Novo Redondo, I was far from imagining that, 44 years later, I would be witnessing the launch of a work that would immortalize the Chronicle of those unforgettable days.<\/p>\n

Gabi committed himself wholeheartedly to the Singapore project and was his right-hand man until the book came out of press.<\/p>\n

The work portrays the odyssey of the opening of the Revolutionary Instruction Center (CIR) “Sangue do Povo”, in October 1974, in the town of Assango, on the outskirts of the village of Gabela, in the province of Cuanza-Sul. to play a leading role in the formation and consolidation of FAPLA as a future national army.<\/p>\n

In the CIR “Sangue do Povo” the most emblematic military contingents of the MPLA were formed, namely the legendary “Kwenha” Squadron, the “Vietnam”, “Ngunza-Kabolo” and “Cambodja” squadrons.<\/p>\n

The late General Gabi Amado is one of the protagonists of the incredible military epic of an intrepid generation of Angolans. We remember the battles that took place on the eve of and after the proclamation of National Independence, in November 1975, in which the combatants formed in the CIR Sangue played a decisive role,of the people.<\/p>\n

In what was recorded of the combative path of the soldiers of the “CIR Sangue do Povo” we glimpse a parade of men made, neither of bronze nor of iron. To paraphrase Dotoevsky, they are all flesh and blood. Men and women of our people. Without wishing to glorify any war hero, General Jo\u00e3o Gabriel Vieira Lopes Amado “Gabi” was one of them and his memory will always be present.<\/p>\n
