Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The acceptance tests of the equipment, for the preparation of the start-up of the first two turbines of the Luachimo Hydroelectric Dam, in Lunda-Norte province, began Tuesday, according to the director of the rehabilitation and expansion works of the infrastructure. structure, Joaquim Costa.<\/b><\/p>\n

The first two turbines, with the capacity to produce 17 megawatts of electricity, are already installed, and the assembly of the other two, with the same power, is over 60 percent complete.<\/p>\n

Joaquim Costa informed that the tests of the gates, bars, sound system, among others, consist of verifying the conformity of the equipment.<\/p>\n

Estimated at more than US$212 million, via a credit line from China, the works will increase the energy capacity provided by the infrastructure from 8.4 to 34 megawatts (MW), exceeding the local need, that is, about 50 percent of the energy produced should remain as a reserve.<\/p>\n

The start-up of this energy project, which will have a power plant made up of four generator sets of 8.5 megawatts each, out of a total of 34, will allow the expansion of energy for the benefit of 186 thousand residents in the city of Dundo and in the municipalities of Cambulo and Lucapa, including the towns of Fucauma, Cassanguidi, Luxilo and Calonda.<\/p>\n

In addition to household connections, which in the first phase will benefit more than nine thousand families, the project provides for around 30 industrial connections.<\/p>\n

Currently, 17,950 customers, of which 13,250 in the postpaid system and 4,700 prepaid, benefit from electricity from the public grid in the municipality of Chitato, through a thermal power plant with 30 megawatts, while the nine municipalities in the interior are supplied with generator sets, which benefits around ten thousand families.<\/p>\n

Lunda-Norte, with almost one million inhabitants, results from the division of the former province of Lunda, on July 4, 1978. It is located in the northeast of the country and comprises the municipalities of Chitato (political and economic capital), Cambulo, Caungula, Cuilo, Cuango, Capenda Camulemba, Lucapa, Lubalo, L\u00f3vua and X\u00e1-Muteba.<\/p>\n
