Each one, in its own way, and taking into account political-ideological lines, sold dreams and swore to hold the best promises for the country and the Angolan people.

The National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced to the country, the day before the vote, that it had organized the electoral process with fairness, transparency and rigor, making it known that there were no reasons for concern.

The electoral observer missions, international and national, all recognized that the General Elections were free, transparent and fair and congratulated the Angolan people for the orderly and exemplary way in which they addressed the assemblies to exercise their right to vote.

Esperança Costa, who will take on the role of Vice-President of the Republic in a few days, in statements to Jornal de Angola, congratulated the Angolans for the absolute majority of the MPLA. She stressed that “the people were faithful to place their trust in João Lourenço, to govern and maintain the consolidation of peace, democracy and stability in the country”.

He added that he will support President João Lourenço in the implementation of policies to improve the living conditions of Angolans, thus giving continuity to the reforms implemented by the Executive, operated in the last five years. Esperança Costa recalled that a lot has already been done, despite the difficulties that the country has gone through, with emphasis on the construction of more schools, hospitals, roads and other infrastructures that have allowed families and institutions to be dignified.

The path taken by the MPLA, which made it possible to re-elect President João Lourenço and his assistant, so to speak, Esperança Costa, began much earlier and was marked by a heated political-electoral dispute. This dispute was intensely experienced by internet users. In fact, during the period in question, the country registered lively debates, some in a very accentuated tone, animated by the use of techniques for manipulating public opinion and technological means that consolidated social networks as, more than a system, the living stage of the nation’s life, where everyone can, in their own way, express their right to be Angolan, trusting in the freedom to scrutinize the governance. Discounts made for inappropriate use…

The press witnessed these debates, having underlined, at the time, more specifically in June this year, that this exercise was close to suffocating currents of political thought, such was the peak of the degree of irritation, but, fortunately, things were controlled. The environment, however, still imposes some discursive caution, mainly due to the challenge that the country has at hand, namely after the General Elections, due to the strong emotions, typical of situations like these. The National Electoral Commission (CNE), which announced, yesterday, the final results of the elections, attentive to the political-electoral dynamics, he defined the circumstances with an appeal based on three fundamental axes: peace; democracy; development. Thus, the preparation, organization, dispute and voting were submitted to the guidelines present in its slogan.

The particularity of the slogan “Vote for Peace, Democracy and Development” had a great influence on the actions of the parties and voters, who together participated in an orderly and exemplary manner. The MPLA, in this regard, gave the signal for this path, by demonstrating its commitment to helping to form an organized electoral environment that would ensure life after the elections. Its secretary for Information and Propaganda stated, at the time, that the MPLA continued to work to conquer the Angolans and be power in the next 50 years, with no place among the comrades for anything other than victories. It is with this in mind that the elections of 24 August were viewed.

Profile

The Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança Costa, holds a PhD in Phytoecology (Technical University of Lisbon, 1991-1997), a Master’s degree in Plant Productivity (Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa – 1990-1992), a degree in Biology ( Faculty of Sciences, Universidade Agostinho Neto – 1978-1985), in addition to having attended high school at Liceu D.
