Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The US Government released Friday that it has recommended to Congress an admission quota of 125,000 refugees for fiscal year 2023, lower than the 200,000 requested to President Joe Biden by 300 organizations and religious leaders.<\/b><\/p>\n

“The United States is and will continue to be a global leader in international humanitarian response, including refugee relocation,” said US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price.<\/p>\n

The Departments of State, Homeland Security and Health have sent Congress a report that recommends admitting up to 125,000 refugees in the fiscal period beginning October 1, which falls short of the request made this week by more than 300 organizations and religious leaders who sent a letter to Biden asking the US head of state to recommend an admission quota of 200,000 refugees.<\/p>\n

Ned Price highlighted that in fiscal 2022, which ends at the end of September, the US acted to increase the relocation of particularly vulnerable groups, including refugees from American countries, as well as Congolese, Syrian, Ukrainian, Burmese and other nationalities, in addition to of LGBTQI+ people.<\/p>\n

In addition, the spokesperson added, the United States “provided additional support for the initial relocation of more than 80,000 Afghans in communities across the country in the largest effort undertaken in 40 years.”<\/p>\n
