The age difference between the oldest and youngest deputy is 50 years. The FNLA parliamentarian was a deputy between 1992 and 1998.

According to the voice of experience, this Legislature intends to contribute to the creation of laws that can improve the social conditions of Angolans, while Ariane hopes to defend issues that affect youth, such as access to their first job, their first home, among others, for the sustainability of the country.

For Ariane Rebeca Nhany, deputy of the Parliamentary Group of UNITA, the new Legislature will be one of many challenges, in particular due to the way in which the General Elections took place. She pointed out the departisanship of institutions as one of the great challenges of the party she represents: “We are going to invest in this issue and go to the bottom, because you cannot live democratically in this way”.

Despite being the youngest, she said she felt prepared for the challenges: “Angola is a new country and it deserves the youth to look at and embrace the challenges”.

In turn, still in his debut role, Esteves Hilário, from the MPLA Parliamentary Group, intends to work with a sense of mission in honor of the mandate granted by the people. To this end, he wants to contribute with the experience of the areas of technical and professional knowledge to enrich the laws in the production of diplomas that can satisfy the interests of the people.

Nuno Álvaro Dala, another novice in these tasks and for UNITA, pointed out three lines of intervention capable of helping the country to take qualitative steps in terms of development. It is, according to the deputy, the implementation of the municipalities, the feasibility of a balanced constitutional review that reflects the interests of the different parties and a contribution to a governance more focused on the citizen.

Oath

The deputies leaving the General Elections of 24 August last took the oath in the National Assembly for the V Legislature 2022-2027 on Friday.

After being sworn in, legislators received badges, containing the insignia, the national flag, the words National Assembly and deputy, as well as the year of investiture. Between hugs and applause, the act was guided by the outgoing president of the National Assembly, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.

The term of office of deputies begins with the first meeting of the National Assembly, after the General Elections, and ends with the inaugural meeting after the subsequent elections.

For the regular exercise of the mandate, among others, the rights of deputies are to present bills, participate in discussions and votes, propose the holding of parliamentary hearings, ask ministers of State and ministers about their acts or the Administration public.

Among the duties are to attend the meetings of the Plenary and the Committees to which they belong, to respect and preserve the dignity of the Parliament and of the deputies, to observe order and discipline, in addition to respecting the authority of the President of the National Assembly.

Board of the Assembly

In addition to the inauguration of the deputies, the constitutive meeting of the V Legislature elected the board of the National Assembly, namely, the president of the National Assembly, the vice-presidents and the secretary of the table.

Deputy Carolina Cerqueira was elected president of the National Assembly, on a proposal from the MPLA Parliamentary Group, while her fellow benches Américo Cuononoca and Raul Lima were elected first and second vice-presidents. Manuel Lopes Moniz Dembo and Rosa da Cunha Cardoso Albino, both from the MPLA, were elected first and fourth secretaries of the National Assembly.

Churches’ Reaction

The leaders of churches recognized by the Angolan state defended, on Friday, greater proximity of deputies to religious congregations and the people.

Reacting on the sidelines of the swearing in of deputies as a result of the General Elections of 24 August, the religious leaders expressed their willingness to contribute, with Parliament, to the approval of laws for the creation of better living conditions for Angolans.

According to the secretary-general of the Council of Christian Churches in Angola (CICA), Reverend Deolinda Dorcas Tecas, quoted by Angop, it is necessary for the deputies to be closer to the Church, in order to know better the people’s aspirations.

“The Church has a very large reach in the interior of the country, since it is implanted in places where the deputies do not have access”, he added, appealing to the newly elected young deputies to “put aside vanity” and work, with dedication, for the benefit of the populations.

The leader of the Angolan Christian Forum, Reverend Luís Nguimbi, said that he hopes that social issues will have priority on the parliamentary agenda, pointing out the social area as a priority for the deputies, as the Angolan should feel good in his own country.

The prophetess Suzete João, leader of the Spiritist Theosophical Church, considered the current Legislature to be very comprehensive in terms of age and gender. According to the religious, in Parliament there will be discussions on diversity, which should support laws favorable to the population.

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
