Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Anto\u0301nio Guterres, yesterday asked the Security Council to guarantee “predictable funding” for African Union operations authorized by the body itself.<\/b><\/p>\n

At a UN Security Council meeting on cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union, Guterres said he was preparing a progress report on the financing of these operations, which should be delivered in April 2023.<\/p>\n

“It is up to us to implement an innovative architecture that supports African peace operations in an effective and sustainable way”, said the UN leader, adding that Africa continues to face “persistent challenges”, which “can only be met through a local and tailored approach, as well as strong determination from the international community — including within this Council”.<\/p>\n

In his speech, the former Portuguese prime minister indicated a series of problems that affect the African continent, such as the fact that the use of force continues to be often seen as the only method of resolving disputes; the rise of unconstitutional changes of Government; and the fact that Daesh and Al-Qaida affiliates continue their deadly attacks and the extension of their dominance in the Sahel.<\/p>\n

In the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Sudan and Libya, protracted conflicts and a dire humanitarian situation are driving people to despair, said Guterres.<\/p>\n

For the secretary-general, Africa is a “classic case of moral and economic injustice”, referring to climate change.<\/p>\n
