Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The World Health Organization (WHO) announced, THURSDAY, that it has decided to maintain Covid-19 as a public health emergency of international concern, due to the uncertain evolution of the pandemic.<\/b><\/p>\n

The decision was taken last week, at a meeting of the Emergency Committee for Covid-19, where the global situation and the way forward were discussed.<\/p>\n

“Although the global situation has obviously improved since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the virus continues to change and there are still many risks and uncertainties. This pandemic has surprised us before and it may well do it again”, justified the director. -WHO General Tedros Ghebreyesus.<\/p>\n

“The committee’s view is that Covid-19 remains a public health emergency of international concern, and I agree,” he added.<\/p>\n

The WHO has repeated in recent months that although the number of new cases is falling a little around the world, countries must remain vigilant and boost vaccination of the most vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is still a risk that new variants will exacerbate the ongoing health impact, particularly as winter approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, and there is still a need for a coordinated international response to address inequalities in access to life-saving tools.\u201d said the WHO, based in Geneva.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organization points out that while weekly deaths resulting from Covid-19 infection are close to the lowest since the pandemic began, that number “remains high compared to other respiratory viruses”.<\/p>\n
