The failed soba directed the traditional power of the Santos family between 2007 and 2022.

The enthronement ceremony of the new chief Santos, considered a true hymn to culture, took place in the neighborhood of the same name and was marked by the performance of various rituals. The act was witnessed by more than one hundred guests, including traditional authorities, deputies to the National Assembly and members of the provincial government, with emphasis on the governor of Lunda-Norte, Deolinda Vilarinho.

Songs and dances typical of the Lubas ethnic group, to which the Santos family belongs, were in evidence at the ceremony, which culminated in a party filled with “delicacies” from the land.

The new leader was enthroned by Norberto dos Santos “Kwata Kanawa”, family patriarch and legitimate heir to the throne, designated by his grandfather, soba Santos I, who died in 1971, to succeed him.

Closer to the community

After handing over the symbol of power to the new occupant of the throne, Kwata Kanawa appealed to Santos V to be closer to the community, raising the population’s awareness of the observance of values such as mutual respect, patriotism, also assuming the role of guide of youth.

Kwata Kanawa urged the youth to invest in academic training, but also to learn from their elders the values they do not find at school, with a view to preserving local habits and customs. “I hand over this symbol of our traditional power so that you can lead the destinies of this great community. I am the owner of this power that I am transmitting to you so that you can exercise it with diligence, dedication, discipline and love for others. It is necessary to unite the community and be a guide for the youth in their preparation for the future, observing values such as mutual respect and patriotism”, he said.

He considered that the entry into office of chief Santos V has a special meaning for the family, the local community and the province of Lunda-Norte, as it coincides with the celebrations of the 47 years of National Independence and the centenary of the Founder of the Nation and first President of the Republic, António Agostinho Neto.

The new soba, whom the council of family elders decided to entrust with the responsibility of directing the community’s destinies, will have two sobetas as assistants. One will be responsible for social, family and women’s affairs and another will be responsible for housekeeping, including community cleanliness.

Nemésio Valério Dâmaso dos Santos Benedito, under Santos V, conveyed to the provincial governor of Lunda-Norte, Deolinda Vilarinho, that he will collaborate with the local authorities in the tasks defined in the Government programme.

When addressing those present, after the enthronement, the soba assured the counterparts of traditional power present the maintenance of ties of cooperation and good neighborliness with the mayors Nachiri, Comboio, Sachindongo, as well as the sobas Dinhuca, Fortuna, Ritenda, Samacaca, Sacavula, Muhongo, Munanga Wenvu, Muanguvu, Camatundu and Fuamba, all from the municipality of Chitato.

Kwata Kanawa abdicated the throne in favor of his father

Today deputy to the National Assembly for the MPLA bench, Kwata Kanawa has already held the positions of governor of the provinces of Lunda-Norte and Malanje and minister of Parliamentary Affairs. Due to his involvement in political life, even though he was the legitimate successor in the lineage, he never got to assume responsibility for the sobado that had been assigned to him by his grandfather.

A curious and unprecedented fact in terms of the succession of traditional power in that family has to do with the fact that, with the physical disappearance of chief Santos I, Kwata Kanawa passed the regency of the throne to his father, Domingos dos Santos Benedito (1918- 1990), who would become soba Santos II.

Domingos dos Santos Benedito, soba Santos II, father of Kwata Kanawa, was a tailor by trade. Considered assimilated in the colonial period, he studied at the Catholic Mission of Saurimo.

The intellectual and professional dimension, allied to the religious formation allowed the soba Santos II to carefully educate his children, including Kwata Kanawa. Therefore, he defended the need for the traditional power to assume the role of an educating entity, especially for youth, with a view to elevating and preserving the cultural values of ancestry.

Exile and return

In 1974, with the political crisis that followed the fall of the fascist colonial regime in Portugal, Santos II, who had been on the throne for only three years, took refuge in former Zaire, today the Democratic Republic of Congo. His return to Angola took place in December 1979. His main task was the reconstruction of the sobado in the Santos neighbourhood, in Chitato, consolidating family ties with the new national authorities and laying the foundations for its modernisation.

Santos III

After the death of Santos II, in 1990, due to illness, the leadership of the sobado passed to Afonso dos Santos Benedito, brother of the deceased and uncle of Kwata Kanawa.

Enthroned in 1990 as soba Santos III, Afonso dos Santos Benedito was a Human Resources technician at the National Diamond Company of Angola (ENDIAMA).

Kwata Kanawa acknowledged that soba Santos III, who was married to Mrs. Bernadette M’puto and father of 17 children by different women, was a rigorous man, an excellent storyteller and a profound connoisseur of the family’s history.

According to Kwata Kanawa, Santos III’s main task was to assert the sobado and consolidate cooperation ties with all the authorities, a job facilitated by his professional career.

Kwata Kanawa recalled that the reign of Santos III ended unexpectedly, with his death, on November 30, 2007, due to illness, having been buried on November 2 of the same year, in the municipal cemetery of Chitato, where the former chiefs also lie of the family.

New generation

On the 15th of January 2008, the exercise of traditional power passed to Carlos Alberto Dâmaso dos Santos Benedito, son of Afonso dos Santos Benedito, being the first grandson of chief Santos I to assume leadership.

Carlos Alberto Dâmaso dos Santos Benedito, who assumes the sobado as Santos IV, had a degree in Physical Education and a bachelor’s degree in Educational Sciences, in French Linguistics, having been married to Maria da Conceição Alfredo Benedito and father of seven children. Santos IV divided the sobado with public functions in the State apparatus.

The difficult choice of successor

After the death of Carlos Alberto Dâmaso dos Santos Benedito, in September of this year, the Council of Elders of the family decided to fill the void with the appointment of the new soba, with the choice falling on Nemésio Valério Dâmaso dos Santos Benedito, with the title of soba Santos v.

Kwata Kanawa considered the exercise “very difficult and painful” because it required careful selection from among eligible grandchildren.

Featured family

The throne of traditional power in the Santos family is attributed exclusively to the “offshoots” of the lineage of the woman married to the first soba of the dynasty crucial in the National Liberation Struggle that led to the conquest of National Independence in 1975.

Santos are among the most important, active and educated families in Lunda-Norte, from the colonial period to the present day, with names that stand out in national political, academic and sporting life, including in the media.

Norberto dos Santos “Kwata Kanawa” is one of the resonant names of that family. Narciso Damásio Benedito dos Santos, former Deputy Minister of Education and deputy to the National Assembly for the MPLA, the late General Jorge Manuel dos Santos “Sukissa”, who until date of death was the commander of the Angolan Navy, are other prominent figures in the family, which holds one of the most influential traditional powers in Lunda-Norte.

The previous chief, Carlos Alberto Dâmaso dos Santos Benedito, who died in September, a career Physical Education teacher, also held important positions in the local government, having been, successively, municipal administrator of Chitato, director of Youth, Sports, Commerce, Hospitality, Tourism and the extinct Support Office for Municipal and Communal Administrations.

Better known as Carlos Benedito, he was also a Handball coach, until the date of his death, and exercised the functions of director of the office of the former governor of Lunda-Norte, Ernesto Muangala.

Respect for lineage

Alberto Caxala, leader of the Nachiri regedoria, recognized that the enthronement ceremony of chief Santos V was a demonstration that succession in traditional power must respect the principle of lineage.

Alberto Caxala underlined that the act is a legacy of the ancestors, which society should value. Mayor Nachiri appealed to the other families that hold traditional power to follow the example of the Saints.

The Nachiri district office, he said, will provide full support to the new chief Santos so that, through joint efforts, ways can be found to solve the problems of the communities under their tutelage.

The director of the Provincial Office for Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, José Fernando Pinto, praised the level of organization that culminated in the delivery of the traditional power symbol of the Santos family.

The official stressed that in the speech of the family patriarch, Norberto dos Santos “Kwata Kanawa”, it was clear that the soba must work to strengthen unity, family cohesion and monitor the problems that afflict the community.

Attention to social issues

Rosa Ngalula, an influential woman from the Santos neighborhood, the new soba’s area of jurisdiction, warned of the importance of the leader paying attention to social issues in the locality, such as water, electricity and basic sanitation. “The soba is the one who cares about everyone. He must help correct everything that is wrong, visit the sick, participate in traditional ceremonies such as parties and others. He can count on our support ”, she assured.

Jonatá Cabeia, 25 years old, asked the new chief Santos to work with the municipal administration of Chitato to implement a project of self-construction directed in the community.

Social housing, employment for youth, support for the promotion of agriculture, livestock, fishing and rehabilitation of football fields, must be in the order of priority in terms of advocacy that soba Santos V must do with the State.

Tribute to deceased chiefs

The enthronement ceremony of the new soba is marked by several moments, according to the rituals established by the family, since the foundation of the sobado flowers on their tombs. At midnight, before public presentation and enthronement, the future soba undergoes a ritual restricted to family members.

Protocols establish that the new chief must climb the roof of the house where the act will take place, then shoot with a firearm and finish with some remarks addressed to those present at the ritual.

In the final part of the enthronement ceremony, the new head of the Santos family offers a five-liter bottle of wine to each of the regedores and chiefs invited to the event, as a way of thanking and reinforcing the collaboration between the leaders of customary power.

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
