Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The president of the African Union (AU), Macky Sall, said Thursday, in Washington, that Africa wishes to share five priorities on its agenda with the United States of America, with particular emphasis on the fight against terrorism.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at the Summit of Heads of State, part of the US-Africa Summit, the also President of Senegal explained that the first priority of the Afro-American partnership is the maintenance of peace, security and the fight against terrorism, globally.<\/p>\n

“We want the fight against terrorism in Africa to be an integral part of the global fight against this scourge, which constitutes a threat to peace and international security”, he expressed.<\/p>\n

According to the AU president, the African states hope for a strong involvement of Washington in this vital issue, so that the UN Security Council (SC) of the UN places the issue of the fight against terrorism in Africa in the same framework of collective security mechanisms of the Universal Charter of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

In this regard, he welcomed the decision of the US President, Joe<\/p>\n

Biden, to support Africa’s participation as a permanent member<\/p>\n

of the G20 group and the United Nations Security Council.<\/p>\n

According to Macky Sall, the second line of the strategic partnership has to do with climate change, health crises and the right of special drawing or suspension of debts contracted by African States.<\/p>\n

Therefore, he requested international solidarity action in relation to<\/p>\n

debt forgiveness, in order to ensure the efforts of resilience and relaunch of African economies.<\/p>\n

On that subject, US President Joe Biden announced on Thursday in Washington that his country is leading a global effort to bring about equitable agreements in order to offer debt relief for global credits.<\/p>\n

“We are asking Congress to provide a USD 21 billion credit to the IMF, to give low- and middle-income countries<\/p>\n

the necessary access to finance ,” said Biden.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, within the framework of the strategic partnership with the US, Macky Sall said that Africa’s third pillar of action is the involvement of the Americans in the construction of infrastructures, such as roads, railways, power stations and digital infrastructures.<\/p>\n

He referred that Africa needs USD 96 billion, until 2030, to finance its needs, therefore it requires an equitable transition<\/p>\n

in competitive terms, to have universal access to electricity, the<\/p>\n

lack of which affects more than 600 million Africans.<\/p>\n

Another important pillar in the cooperation strategy, according to the AU president, is winning the battle for food sovereignty, which is why the continent requests the US to adopt urgent measures to<\/p>\n

facilitate access to fertilizers and other agricultural products.<\/p>\n

“We want to work with the US to improve production in Africa,<\/p>\n

based on massive investment”, stated Macky Sall, during the<\/p>\n

meeting that was attended by President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n

Likewise, he said, Africa appeals to the US for a joint work<\/p>\n

likely to ensure a more just and peaceful world governance, having requested the lifting of the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Summit of Heads of State, which discussed strategic partnerships for Agenda 2063, the last day of the US-Africa Summit was marked by the approach of the panels, “Multilateral Partnerships with Africa for Global Meeting” and “Promotion of Security Food and Resilience of Food Systems”.<\/p>\n

The Washington Summit, an initiative of President Joe Biden,<\/p>\n

supported by the African Union, took place from 13 to 15 December, with the participation of more than 49 African leaders, including the Angolan Head of State, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, and several businessmen .<\/p>\n

During the first two days, several events were held, with emphasis on the Youth Forum and the Eximbank Annual Congress, which had more than 100 participants.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the Business Forum took place, at which the President of Angola spoke on the panel on the theme “Building a Sustainable Future: Partnerships to Finance African Infrastructure and the Energy Transition”.<\/p>\n
