And we do it in close coordination with the Angolan Government and development partners, supporting the country’s efforts, in a macro way, acting with the decision, and in a micro way, with the implementation of projects on the ground”, underlined the Canadian.

Integrated Model

He cited as an example of integration, in 2022, the facilitation of the UN in Angola for the engagement of the private sector with the public sector, through the platform of the Integrated Model of the SDGs, led by the Government, aiming at supporting the efforts of the Executive in accelerating projects priority.

He assured, on the one hand, that the Government has a fundamental role “in creating a favorable environment” for synergies and collaborations, which benefit the economy, having highlighted, on the other hand, the role of the UN as a “facilitator” of this triangular cooperation.

“It is the private sector that creates more jobs and, with that, manages to add added value to the economy”, he admitted, then calling on civil society, particularly the youngest, to be involved in fulfilling the 2030 Agenda, “so that achieve more consistent advances” in the progress of the country.

He admitted, however, that it is a “continuous and progressive work”, which “is not done in a day, month or a year”, having confessed that the “gains are slow, but vigorous”. And he added: “Instead of seeing as a brake on the motivation of our purpose, we prefer to look at it as a stimulus that inspires us”.

Global Fund

The head of the United Nations mission in the country assured that there are visible and growing signs of confidence in Angola, on the part of various national and international financial and development partners. As proof of this, she revealed that she almost doubled the amount allocated by the Global Fund for the period from 2024 to 2027, with a view to combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

“These are some impulses gained, but in the near future we will have to roll up our sleeves and accelerate the pace to achieve the SDGs by 2030”, he underlined, clarifying that there are adaptations to be considered a priority for a country like Angola, “with more than 60% of the young population and the second highest fertility rate in the Southern African Development Community”.

UN considers country leader of peace and stability

Zahira Virani highlighted Angola’s contribution as a mediator of conflicts in the southern region of the continent. For the UN resident coordinator, the role played by President João Lourenço demonstrates the country’s experience in leading actions to promote peace and stability in the region.

“There is a general recognition that the country has been consolidating itself as a leader in the region in actions for stability and peace on the African continent, namely in these matters in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic”, revealed the official, assuring that the UN believes that “the hope for achieving peace lies in regional engagement and leadership”.

Regarding the elections organized by the country, in August 2022, and won by the MPLA, the UN resident coordinator revealed that she was another example of consolidated democracy in Angola and whose experience of 20 years of peace was decisive for success.

“We witnessed, in 2022, strongly disputed and diversified general elections, giving shape to a functional Government and a multi-party Parliament with greater female leadership. For the UN, these are clear signs of major milestones for the country in its maturation of democratic governance. ”, found Zahira Virani.

“Canal do Cafu multiplied development projects”

The resident coordinator of the United Nations in Angola considered that, with the inauguration of the Canal do Cafu project (a system for capturing and transferring water from the Cunene River to various villages), the opportunities for implementing development projects between partners had multiplied. .

Partnerships for accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he said, have to be thought of and developed both as an immediate response and a long-term vision.

“We continue to live times of great global challenges, in which the reinforcement of multisectoral partnerships are essential to overcome adversities. The climate crisis has aggravated the drought in the south of the country, which affects the populations”, he said, adding that only with a multisectoral cooperation between partners can mitigate such impacts.

He revealed, also in this context, that, at the initiative of the Ministry of State for Social Action and together with partners, the UN envisages the creation of a joint and integrated response mechanism, with a view to more effective multisectoral coordination, for actions aligned with the assistance to the most vulnerable people in the south of the country.

“The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Field Schools in partnership with the European Union to increase production and productivity in rural communities in the south of the country are a good example of how a large regional project infrastructure in the country can boost a local development program and change lives”, he concluded.

PROFILE

Zahira Virani, a native of Canada, was appointed UN Resident Coordinator in Angola on September 21, 2020. She has more than 20 years of experience in management positions, with organizations linked to development and humanitarian actions.

At the UN, Virani recently held the position of resident coordinator in São Tomé and Príncipe, where she was appointed after having held top positions within the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

During this period working with UNDP, the new UN Resident Coordinator in Angola passed through Bosnia Herzegovina, Tajikistan, Panama, Afghanistan and, finally, Geneva (Switzerland), as a consultant.

He has a higher education in Arts and Economic Sciences and in his professional career, before arriving at the United Nations, he also had solid experience in non-governmental organizations.

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
