Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Angola intends to establish a true partnership with the Republic of Zambia to promote and expand ties of friendship and economic cooperation, said this Wednesday in Luanda, the Angolan Head of State, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o.<\/b><\/p>\n

The statesman, who was speaking at the opening of the bilateral talks, within the framework of the State visit of the Zambian President to Angola, Hakainde Hichilema, said that the partnership aims to promote and expand the sectors of education, culture and science, agricultural production, extractive and transforming industries of raw materials, as well as road, rail and electricity connections between the two countries.<\/p>\n

According to President Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, despite the most varied agreements, memorandums and protocols signed so far between the two countries, “the results of economic cooperation and commercial exchange are still not very expressive, being far from our ambitions”.<\/p>\n

He advocated, in fact, the need to develop a more active cooperation to better take advantage of the vast resources of the two countries, the capacity and equity of their peoples and the dynamism of their rulers in order to change the framework.<\/p>\n

In this context, he highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Public Works, Urbanism and Housing of Angola and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development of Zambia, to facilitate the construction of the road connecting the two countries, via the border from Jimbe.<\/p>\n

For the Head of State, such an understanding will give a great impetus to the development of the private sector, with the massification of the movement of investors and tourists in both directions.<\/p>\n

He added that, with this, the intention was to place the infrastructures of the Lobito corridor, which include the Commercial Port of Lobito, the Mineiro Terminal of the same port and the Benguela Railway line, with the Luacano branch, to be built soon, in Moxico, at the service of the economies of countries in the region, namely Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).<\/p>\n

As the Angolan statesman stated, other important initiatives could boost bilateral cooperation, as is the case, under study, of the border electrification project between the two countries, “which will help boost the growth of our border areas”, or even, the ongoing project to build the Rivungo\/Xangongo navigable channel and respective infrastructure.<\/p>\n

He considered that the visit of his Zambian counterpart to Angola represents a great opportunity for them to address the best way to boost, with a practical sense, all existing initiatives, so that the best benefits can be reaped from the cooperation that may be developed in such areas, which will certainly result in significant reciprocal advantages.<\/p>\n

Zambia advocates greater investment in infrastructure<\/b><\/p>\n

On the same occasion, the President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, defended greater investment in infrastructure, with a view to strengthening economic relations with Angola.<\/p>\n

The Zambian statesman stated that, in addition to excellent cultural, historical and solidarity relations, investments are needed to link the two countries.<\/p>\n

He considered it necessary to make better use of the Upper Zambezi basin and air connections.<\/p>\n

President Hakainde Hichilema suggested the creation of mechanisms to monitor the implementation of agreements between the two countries.<\/p>\n

He expressed a predisposition to collaborate in the efforts of President Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o for peace and stability in the region.<\/p>\n

Angola and Zambia develop relations within the framework established by the General Agreement on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation, signed in 1979.<\/p>\n
