Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The attribution of exploration licenses to logging companies, in Cunene province, has been suspended since 2020, due to the problems of climate change that affect the region.<\/b><\/p>\n

The information was provided Thursday by the head of the Institute for Forestry Development in Cunene, Dumbo Mupei, who said that the sector controls 22 companies that do not carry out activities, as a result of the ban on issuing permits by the central body.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe non-licensing of any companies is a specific guideline for the province of Cunene, which due to the cyclical droughts and floods that the region has faced in recent years\u201d, he explained.<\/p>\n

According to the official, all activity related to the exploitation of forest resources must be regulated, given the impact it has on climate change.<\/p>\n

However, he indicated that, despite the suspension, unidentified people have been making some cuts and sawing clandestinely, but without involving industrial equipment.<\/p>\n

He also made it known that mining for wood is registered in the border region with the province of Cuando Cubango, where unidentified people carry out unruly cutting of forest resources.<\/p>\n

Towards the interior of the municipalities, he added, there are some explorations for the manufacture of charcoal, wood cuttings and firewood on a recurring basis.<\/p>\n

However, he discouraged the referred practice, having appealed to businessmen interested in the sector to follow the implemented norms.<\/p>\n

The Base Law on Forestry and Wild Fauna, which regulates forest activity in Angola, determines the annual forestry campaign, which focuses on the rational cutting of trees, through the attribution of the exploration license.<\/p>\n

Data from the first National Forest Inventory of 2017, indicates that Angola has a forest potential of 69 million, 382 thousand and 680 hectares of native forest.<\/p>\n

Of these four million indicators, 467 thousand and 100 are in Cunene, representing 3.58 percent of the national territory.<\/p>\n
